Hub Caps

Loose Hubcaps

I had a problem where I couldn’t get the hub cap to stay onto the rim. On the path to enlightenment, I later discovered that you press the hub cap in, and then turn until it’s tight. The rim had a few pieces of metal protruding on the inside of the rim, and the hubcap itself has a notch that catches against them.

Dents

In review: My front passenger-side hub cap has a small dent on the side.

Rust Spots

Although the hub caps are in really good condition compared to most, they were covered in small rust spots. After doing a bit of research, I decided to take the water displacement approach with a can of WD-40 and some elbow geese using a ball of steel wool.

Looking over the hubcaps first, I realized the manufacturers logo in the center was actually a foil sticker, and some of the blue print was wearing off. I made sure to keep the lube away from the stickers, for fear of causing them to come off, or discolor.

After drying it off, rubbing a soft towel along the surface, the caps were done. The rust was gone, but there was still quite a bit of noticeable pitting.
